assembling an embedded system with the help of a microscope
Dinko Oletic from the University of Zagreb is assembling an embedded system a ETH Zürich.

To contribute to equal distribution of knowledge and technology in Europe, the consortium of top education and research institutes from Switzerland (ETH Zurich), Croatia (UNIZG-FER) and FYROM Macedonia (UKIM/FEEIT) is created. The involved research groups consist mainly of young prospective researchers, having an extensive background in the field of energy-efficient networked sensor systems, with complementary skills and knowledge, which benefits to creating new knowledge.
ETH (as the project coordinator) provides a good example of teaching, research and technology transfer to its partners. The activities planned within this project aim at leveraging the capacities of students, researchers and supporting staff, as well as at leveraging capacities of the South Eastern European research institutions which will help them to faster bridge the difficulties of the transition period.
In particular, the proposed action plan of this project aims to:

  • upgrade and strengthen teaching and research infrastructure and potential of UKIM/FEEIT by acquiring new equipment (sensor nodes, sensor gateways and servers for clouds), by defining new laboratory exercises for undergraduate and graduate students using other partners’ experiences, and by developing novel teaching methods and teaching material (e.g. distance learning, video and multimedia lectures, etc.);
  • upgrade project management and technology transfer capacity of UNIZG-FER by organizing trainings of support staff and young researchers, and adopting good practice of ETH;
  • leverage expertize and international visibility of UKIM/FEEIT and UNIZG-FER in the field of networked sensor systems by collaborating with the most prominent Swiss institution (ETH);
  • enhance production of knowledge in the field of networked sensor systems by engaging students and researchers in mobility, organizing short stays and lectures, preparing joint publications and new project proposals;
  • increase networking and industrial collaboration of the partners in South Eastern Europe by organizing specific workshops, panels and conference sessions.

    The expected outcomes of these activities are enhanced capacities of UKIM/FEEIT (primary in education and research) and enhanced capacities of UNIZG-FER (primary in research and technology transfer) which are necessary to create a trend towards developing high technologies and to abate the brain drain from FYROM Macedonia and Croatia, respectively.
